Ten foods high in antioxidants

There are a number of foods that are known to be high in antioxidants. Antioxidants can help protect the body against the effects of aging and disease. These are ten foods high in antioxidants.

Berries. Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries are all rich in antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are a pigment occuring in certain foods that give them their colour, and are a powerful antioxidant.

Dark Chocolate. Chocolate is made from cocoa beans, which are rich in antioxidant flavonoids, minerals and fibre. Opt for chocolate with a high cocoa content (70% or more) for the antioxidant benefits, as generally the more cocoa solids a chocolate contains, the more antioxidants.

Walnuts. Walnuts are rich in omega-3 fats and antioxidants. Studies suggest that having an adequate and balanced intake of omage fats in the diet has been linked with protection from aging.

Mangoes. Mangoes are rich in beta-carotene, high in vitamin C, and contain a significant amount of the antioxidant vitamin E. Vitamin E can help to boost the body’s immune system and promote healthy skin.

Spinach. Spinach is a good source of antioxidant flavinoids and is also high in carotenes. It’s also rich in vitamin K, which can help to boost bone density and strength. Spinach also contains folate and vitamins C and E.

Kale. Kale contains some of the highest levels of antioxidants among vegetables. Kale is a nutrient-dense vegetable that is high in antioxidants and flavonoids, and it is also rich in iron, selenium and vitamins C and E.

Bell peppers. Bell peppers are a rich source of vitamin C and an excellent source of vitamin E. Red and orange peppers contain higher levels of vitamin B6 and beta-carotenes.

Black Beans. Black beans are high in fibre and nutrients. They are rich in the antioxidant compounds anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are powerful antioxidants, which may have a role to play in protecting cells from damage caused by free radicals.

Tomatoes. Tomatoes are a good source of lycopene, an antioxidant that may help to offer protection from prostate cancer. Lycopene is more easily absorbed into the body when it’s cooked. Tomatoes are also high in vitamin C and contain several other antioxidants including quercetin and lutein.

Green Tea. Green tea contains various antioxidants, including catechins, which are believed to have numerous health benefits.

It’s worth noting that this list is not exhaustive, and there are many other foods that provide antioxidants. Including a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains in your diet can help ensure a good intake of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

What are antioxidants and why are they important?

Antioxidants are important for our health as they help protect the body against the effects of oxidative stress, free radicals, toxins and pollutants. Free radicals are believed, in excess, to be a factor in the aging process and the onset of disease.
